RCMP and Alberta sheriffs were kept busy over the long weekend issuing over 5000 tickets for various highway violations but say overall it was a relatively safe weekend.
Alberta's Integrated Traffic Services had officers out across the province monitoring the highways and a total of 5703 charges were laid, most of which were for speeding.
Officers also laid 11 impaired driving charges and 13 driving suspensions.
Two people were killed in separate crashes on Friday in the Westlock and Vulcan areas.
“Despite the tragedies, it was a comparatively safe May Long Weekend.", said Inspector Stephen Grant, Officer in Charge of Operations of the "K" Division Traffic Unit. "Apprehending impaired drivers is one of the top priorities of Alberta's Integrated Traffic Units."
in 2013, over 5000 violations were issued for various offences and eight people died in seven fatal crashes.
