The man convicted of abducting a child in Sparwood two years ago was declared a long-term offender in a Cranbrook, B.C. court on Friday.
Randall Hopley, 48, kidnapped three-year-old Kienan Hebert from his family’s home in the fall of 2011 and returned the young boy a few days later.
RCMP tracked Hopley down to a camp in Crowsnest Pass several days later and arrested him.
He pleaded guilty to the crime in the spring of 2012 and was ordered to undergo a dangerous offender assessment by a judge that summer.
A dangerous offender hearing started for Hopley in October and was adjourned because of the death of his mother.
The hearing resumed and on Friday a judge ruled that Hopley will be designated a long-term offender and not a dangerous offender.
He was sentenced to six years and two months in jail for kidnapping and break and enter.
Hopley will receive 26 months credit for time served so his sentence will be about four years for the offences.
An additonal year in jail has been added to that sentence for property crimes in Alberta, so he will spend a total of about five years in prison.
The long-term offender status means he will be under strict supervision in the community for another 10 years after being released from prison.
