RCMP are searching for a suspect who stole an idling SUV in Airdrie, injuring the SUV owner in the process.

On December 12 at about 9:30 a.m. Airdrie RCMP were called to a vehicle theft in the neighbourhood of Cooper’s Crossing.

The owner of a Ford Flex left the vehicle idling with the keys inside when a woman jumped in and reversed the vehicle quickly as the owner returned. The owner suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.

The suspect is believed to be associated with a man who was driving a grey Ford truck with a white dog decal on the back window. Both suspects escaped.

The stolen vehicle is described as a Grey, 2010 Ford Flex with Alberta Licence plate ZZH 515.

The female suspect is described as:

  • Wearing a toque
  • Large sunglasses
  • Shoulder length black hair

Anyone who has information concerning this crime is asked to contact the Airdrie RCMP Detachment at 403-945-7200.

Calgary police recently ran Operation Cold Start to educate the public on the risk of leaving vehicles idling.

CPS reports that during the first three quarters of this year, 4,190 vehicles were stolen in Calgary, which is 47 per cent higher than the five-year average. Typically, one in four stolen vehicles had their keys left inside of them when they were taken.

Police are reminding people to lock their vehicles while warming them up and make sure all valuables are removed.
