A couple charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life for their infant son have been found guilty by a Lethbridge jury.
The jury of eight women and four men began their deliberations on Monday and came back with a guilty verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
The Crown alleged that David and Collet Stephan waited too long to get their 19-month-old son Ezekiel the medical help he needed and the boy died of meningitis in March 2012.
During the trial, the court heard 911 recordings made by David Stephan, telling the dispatcher that his son wasn’t breathing.
At the time, David had no idea that his son was suffering from meningitis.
The Stephans believed their son had croup or a bad case of the flu and had been giving him natural remedies in an attempt to treat him for two weeks.
David called 911 again when they were on their way to hospital in Cardston, the court heard.
The dispatcher asked David if Ezekiel was breathing and he told them that his wife Collet was administering CPR, but the boy was not responding.
An ambulance met the Stephans on Highway 2 on their way to the hospital and ended up taking him to Lethbridge.
Ezekiel was then flown to the Children’s Hospital in Calgary, where he died four days later.
There is no word yet on sentencing.
