Voters will be handed two ballots at the election polls on Monday; one for your choice of MLA, and one for your choice of federal Senator-in-waiting.

Currently, Alberta is the only province that elects its Senators.

On election day, you'll be expected to pick your three favourites for Senate.

The winners' names will be put on a list for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to consider when a vacancy opens up in the Senate.

Robert Roach with the Canada West Foundation says this system isn't perfect, but it's a step towards making the Senate more useful, "Our founding fathers made a mistake with the senate and we've been stuck with it ever since. It's an unelected body and in these times of democratic legitimacy, it has no democratic legitimacy at all."

Polls say the Senate race is a tight one between the PC and Wildrose Party candidates.

There are thirteen candidates in total, and while that's a lot of people for voters to get to know, Roach says just a few minutes of reading are worth it to make an outdated system more democratic.
