Robin Clegg, a former Olympian, is recovering in hospital after being hit by a vehicle in what witnesses are calling a road rage incident.
It happened along a narrow stretch of Township Road 250 near the Springbank Airport on Sunday afternoon.
Clegg, who competed for Canada in the biathlon event at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, was cycling as part of a 100 kilometer training session with two friends. Clegg’s training partners say a car sped up and veered at the cyclists. The car hit Clegg sending him tumbling into the ditch.
Clegg suffered a broken collarbone and broken elbow and was transported to hospital.
“Here we are minding our own business, hugging the side of the road,” says Clegg’s training partner Jason Myslicki. “To receive that kind of hatred is appalling.”
“He hammers his horn at us, essentially trying to brush us off the road, and we throw up our arms ‘like why? What’s wrong?’ We’re just having good time.”
“He pulls over in front of us and then proceeds to start bullying.”
The driver of the car remained at the scene along with other witnesses until police arrived. Charges are pending.
