Officials with Health Canada have seized a number of products from two Calgary supplement stores and a sex enhancement product has been removed from stores across the country, and online, over health concerns.

Calgary locations of Samson’s Supplements had stocked products which are not approved for sale in Canada as they contain MaHuang (ephedrine) and caffeine, or the prescription drug yohimbine.

The combination of ephedrine and caffeine may cause dizziness, tremors, headaches, heart rate irregularities, psychosis, heart attacks and stroke. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure or diabetes are at risk.

Yohimbine is a prescription drug and, according to Health Canada, should be used under the supervision of a medical professional. Use of the drug may cause serious health concerns. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children should not take yohimbine.

Vivo Brand Management Inc. of Cornwal, Ontario, the distributor of Forta for Men, has recalled the affected lot.

Individuals with cardiac concerns, especially those taking a nitrate drug, are at risk of heart concerns including life-threatening low blood pressure.

Health Canada recommends customers who purchased these items consult their doctor to determine their level of risk.
