Calgarians have voted for a new city council and have put Mayor Naheed Nenshi back in the driver's seat for the next four years.

Nenshi swept the competition in 2010 and political experts say his response to the floods at the end of June made him hard to beat even if turnout was down this time around.

CTV Calgary declared Nenshi the winner early in the race and even though results are still coming in, over 70 percent of voters felt he was the best choice to lead the city into the future.

"For those of you who did win tonight, I want to say congratulations. We have a lot of work to do together throughout this province and I look forward to working with every one of you to make this city and this province even better," said nenshi.

Before he became mayor, Naheed Nenshi ran a large non-profit and was a tenured professor at Mount Royal University's Bissett School of Business.

The native Calgarian, was also the Chairman of the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts and has been involved in a number of charitable initiatives over the years.

Nenshi holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Calgary and a Master in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Eight others threw their hats in the ring for the top job but nobody really came close.

Former councillor John Lord was the closest contender with just over 205 of the votes.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi was sworn in as Calgary’s 36th mayor on October 25th, 2010.
