Members of Calgary’s Egyptian community held a rally on Thursday night to mark a somber anniversary.

Last year, more than 800 people were killed during a protest, demanding an end to military rule in the country.

The incident has since been dubbed the Rabaa Massacre.

Outside City Hall, Egyptian-Canadians held up signs and chanted, reminding Calgarians about what happened and how trouble continues in the country.

“The people of Egypt are still continuing forward and protesting every day. Today at least eight people died from security forces because they are demanding a return to the democratic path,” said protest organizer Mohamed Hassanin.

Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch called the killings of protesters during the Rabaa Massacre ‘crimes against humanity’. The group is calling for a UN inquiry.
