A 70-year-old man has died after an afternoon of boating on a popular central Alberta lake.

According to RCMP, officers were called to the north shore of Sylvan Lake late Wednesday afternoon after an abandoned rental boat was located.

An investigation determined the boat had been rented by a 70-year-old man from Calgary late Wednesday morning in the town of Sylvan Lake.

A search of the area resulted in the discovery of the missing boater approximately 400 metres from the abandoned boat. RCMP pulled the man from the lake and EMS responded to the shore.

Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Ronald Bosh of Calgary.

RCMP do not suspect foul play in Bosh’s death. The Medical Examiner’s office in Calgary will assist with the ongoing police investigation into the incident.

According to RCMP, the boater likely experienced rough water, large waves and strong wind of up to 50 km/h on Wednesday afternoon.
