A teenage girl is dead and her passenger seriously injured following a Saturday evening highway crash east of Penhold, Alberta.
Staff Sergeant Chris Matechuk of the Innisfail RCMP detachment says emergency crews responded to the intersection of Highway 42 and RR273, east of the QEII Highway, at approximately 10:40 p.m. following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
Investigators confirm a tow truck travelling northbound on RR273 attempted to make a left hand turn when it collided with an eastbound Toyota RAV4 on Highway 42.
The driver of the RAV4, a 17-year-old girl from Cremona, Alberta, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 19-year-old man from Cremona, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Calgary area hospital in critical condition.
As of Monday afternoon, the injured man’s condition remains unchanged. The identity of the deceased has not been released.
The two occupants of the tow truck were not seriously injured in the crash.
RCMP members, including the collision reconstruction unit, continue to investigate Saturday night’s crash.
