The family of Sheila Nabb has issued a statement through the AHS highlighting her recovery from reconstructive surgery following a savage beating at a Mexican resort.

Statement issued on behalf of Nabb family

The past few weeks have been very difficult for Sheila and the rest of our family. She has been through a lot and is now in hospital in Calgary, with myself and her family at her side.

On Saturday (January 28), Sheila had extensive reconstructive surgery; a procedure which the doctors say was successful. Since this time she has spent a few days recovering in the Intensive Care Unit. Although she is still sedated, she has been very responsive and we are happy to see small improvements every day.

Sheila's injuries were very serious and she has a long recovery ahead, but we are looking forward to having her back home where she belongs.

I would like to thank Canadians from coast-to-coast for their concern and support, and ask that you continue to keep Sheila and our family in your prayers and continue sending us positive energy.

I would also like to thank the media for continuing to respect our family's privacy during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Andrew Nabb

Sheila Nabb, 37, a health services worker from Calgary was found beaten and bloodied in an elevator in the Riu Emerald Bay Mazatlan hotel in January.

Every bone in the woman's face was broken and she was expected to have reconstructive surgery in Mexico, but complications delayed the procedure.

Her family had her flown back home to Calgary where she has been recuperating ever since.

Jose Acosta Quintero has been charged with the attempted murder of Nabb and will stand trial for the crime, according to reports.

He has also been denied bail.

Acosta initially admitted to beating Nabb, but later reneged, saying that he had been tortured into reading a prepared confession in public he had never seen before.

He told a Mexican judge that police shocked him on the chest and genitals and went as far as showing the court burn marks he said were left on his body left by the torture.

However, he does stand by the story that he was drunk and high when he beat Nabb in an elevator but he didn't mean to kill her.

Acosta claims officials are trying to use him to clean up the area's image.
