A large fire has consumed a rural home near Irricana late Tuesday night and officials say the fire could have been a lot worse.

The fire broke out on the property at just before 11 p.m.

A passerby spotted the fire at the home on Rural Road 275 and stopped to alert the residents.

Thanks to the help, everyone got out of the building safely.

Crews from Rocky View County, Chestermere, Crossfield, and Beiseker attended the blaze but the home could not be saved.

Rocky View Fire Chief Ken McMullen says the fire could have turned out to be a lot worse.

“There were two large, very large propane tanks each about 1,000 gallons and there were a couple inside the structure that was smaller and one off to the side about 100 lbs. They were fortunate enough to locate them early and cool them so even though they were venting, none actually exploded.”

Investigators are expected to determine a cause of the fire later on Wednesday.

The displaced residents are staying with family.
