Hockey Alberta is stepping up and doing their part to help players in High River who’ve lost their precious hockey equipment in June’s flooding.

Tamara Robbins, who works with the organization, put out the call for donations of hockey gear for kids and adults who lost theirs in the flooding.

She says the response has been huge as volunteers loaded trucks with thousands of dollars of equipment on board.

“They've lost all their stuff that was stored in the arena - their jerseys and so forth. But they've also lost all of the hockey gear that was stored in their homes which is not usable now. So my goal was to try and raise enough funds to pay for their registrations to take that burden off the parents and let the kids be kids.”

Foothills Minor Hockey expects to have about 400 kids registered this season and two-thirds will have been affected by the flood.

The average cost for registration in High River is about $675 per player.
