Officials say that after more than two years of hard work, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is now reopened for business in Calgary.

During the 2013 flooding, trails at the facility, the only urban-centered and federally recognized bird sanctuary in Canada, were severely damaged by floodwaters, which eroded much of the natural habitat for the birds.

Crews say the reopening of the facility is completed well ahead of schedule. “The clean-up involved numerous challenges, including environmental sensitivities of the area,” said Doug Marter, Planning and Development manager with the city. “This required staff to be mindful and methodical during the clean-up and repair efforts.”

Some of those challenges included being mindful of work schedules and not letting it disturb nesting or migrating patterns, being aware of equipment on wet and dry ground, and river work only being allowed to proceed during ‘fish windows’ in April and from mid-July to mid-September.

A large portion of the facility is open, but many smaller areas are still closed and visitors need to be mindful of all signage during their visit and are reminded to stay on marked trails only.

Officials also say that the repair of the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is just the beginning and there is more work planned to expand in the near future.
