Students at Mount Royal University took their frustrations with the Redford government straight to her office on Wednesday morning in an effort to get funding for education reinstated.

About 700 students answered the call for a protest from a group called ‘The Student Empowerment Committee’, a grassroots movement that began at MRU.

Post-secondary schools were expecting a two percent increase in funding and instead got slapped with a seven percent cut.

The students marched from the university campus to the Premier’s constituency office to protest the deep budget cuts.

They presented a petition asking for the government to reinstate a $147M cut from the post-secondary budget and say they are concerned about the elimination of programs and increasing class sizes.

"I personally believe my program is going to be affected and that worries me because when I come out of university I have far less of a competitive degree to be able to go on to graduate school, or work in various industries, because of such factors," said Wolfgang Knox from the Student Empowerment Committee.

MRU had to delay registration for the fall semester while it figured out which classes it would cut.

Enterprise and Advanced Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk is meeting with the presidents of Alberta's 26 public post-secondary institutions this week to discuss the budget.
