Some new designs are in the works for the southwest Ring Road.

For the first time, the province says it is willing to look at lowering the speed limit on the southwest portion of the road.

The lower speed limit means the road could turn more sharply. "The geometry of the roadway that's built determines the land requirement and the impact on adjacent communities," says Mayor Dave Bronconnier.

The three options currently being considered for the southwest Ring Road route are:

- Going over or under the Weselhead to connect 37 Street to Highway 22X

- Widen 14 Street to Anderson Road then head east until Anderson joins with Deerfoot Trail

- Widen Glenmore Trail until it joins Macleod Trail then head south until it joins with Highway 22X

In some cases, the widening of the roads would mean some people will lose their homes.

"This is one of the best neighbourhoods in Calgary and if you widen 14 Street you'll destroy the best neighbourhood in the city," says Alan Hallman, a resident of Eagle Ridge.

"Fourteenth Street seems like an easy option but I think you're going to see resistance there as well," says Steve McDomough a resident of Eagle Ridge.

The city and the province say they hope to sign an agreement within two weeks.
