Alcohol is being blamed for a Saturday afternoon crash which killed a 20-year-old man on a reservation southwest of Calgary.

RCMP, Longview fire crews, EMS and STARS Air Ambulance were dispatched to Upper Lake Rd. on the Eden Valley Reserve at approximately 4:30 p.m. following a crash involving an SUV and a pickup truck.

The impact of the collision caused the SUV to flip, ejecting one of the vehicle’s three passengers.  The 20-year-old man, who has not been identified, was pinned under the vehicle.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witnesses, the two drivers knew each other and had been involved in a recent dispute.

Officers say alcohol was a factor in the crash and both drivers of the vehicles have been arrested.

“There’s one deceased and nobody else is injured other than with minor injuries,” says RCMP Constable Tom Christie.  “One male was arrested at the scene and taken away, and a second male was arrested later at a residence and he was also taken to the detachment and placed in a cell.”

RCMP continue to investigate the crash.

Additional RCMP resources responded to the reservation Saturday night after relatives of the deceased damaged property and threatened revenge against those they believed to be responsible for the young man's death.

The Eden Valley Reserve is located approximately 20 kilometres southwest of the town of Longview on Highway 541.
