The Wildrose Party is putting pressure on the premier to demand the resignation of Alberta’s Finance Minister after learning the results of the Auditor General’s report on abuses of government aircraft.

The opposition says the use of government aircraft is controlled by the Minister and that “In total, the rampant abuse of the fleet under Horner’s watch cost taxpayers $3.9 million in 2012 alone.”

In a statement released on Thursday, Wildrose MLA Kerry Towle said Horner failed to do his job.

“Mr. Horner has completely and utterly failed to do his job – and the Auditor General confirms as much,” said Towle . “Albertans should not have to endure one more day of this Mr. Horner’s shocking incompetence. This is the man in charge of making sure their dollars are treated with the utmost respect. Instead, under his watch, they were treated with the utmost contempt. Premier Hancock must demand his immediate resignation.”

The Wildrose claim Horner “misled the Legislature” by insisting there was legitimate government business in Grande Prairie in October 2012. They say it was the same day that the planes flew several PC MLAs there to attend a PC party fundraiser that night and that the Auditor General’s report concluded there was no such government business.

“Mr. Horner simply can’t continue in this role,” Towle said. “His credibility is gone. He must go.”

Horner held a news conference at 2:00 p.m. to respond to the report, click HERE to read his response.
