The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting that took place in the southeast Calgary community of Radisson Heights on Tuesday.

The incident happened at about 11:00 a.m. in the 2800 block of 12 Avenue S.E.

Two officers were following up on a missing person complaint in the area when they were asked by a member of the community to investigate a suspicious vehicle outside a home.

They were told that there was a man sleeping inside a truck that had been parked on the street since about 6:30 a.m.

"The officers approached the vehicle, one member on each side, and attempted to communicate with the driver. At some point during the interaction, the situation escalated and the officer discharged his service firearm," said Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson.

The vehicle continued across the street and slammed into the front of a house nearby.

The driver of the truck was taken to Foothills Hospital with life threatening injuries and remains in serious condition.

CTV News has learned that the man who was shot is 23-year-old Matthew Brown.

No one in the home was injured.

"Based on the details I have so far, I'm confident that the officers involved responded as they have been trained to do so. As police officers we have a duty to protect life. The officer made a split-second decision, based on the circumstances of the situation as they rapidly unfolded in the belief that others were at risk. All members involved have the full support of the Calgary Police force,"said Chief Hanson.

Residents in the neighbourhood are shocked by the incident.

“It’s mostly families around here. I have two young children, so it’s going to be time to move,” says area resident Greg Mitchell. “I don’t need this kind of stuff around my kids here.”

Hanson says the officers felt their safety was put at risk. "Officers are trained to do an assessment of the circumstance and respond with whatever force is appropriate to protect themselves or a member of the public."

Hanson says the vehicle was stolen and that the suspect was known to police.

He says he understands that one officer fired three shots and that the victim's injuries are a result of the discharge.

The officers are on a 30 day leave, with pay, which is standard procedure.

It is also standard procedure for ASIRT, an independent body made up of seasoned investigators, to investigate all shootings of this nature.
