Calgary police have now identified the man who was shot dead in the northeast community of Monterey Park on Sunday afternoon.

At about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Hussein Merhi, 26, was found in medical distress by paramedics in an alley near the 100 block of Del Ray Road N.E.

He died at the scene.

The Officer of the Medical Examiner, which completed an autopsy on Merhi’s body on Monday, found he died of gunshot wounds.

Police say that Merhi had met with at least one other person in the alley prior to his death and, at some point during that meeting, an altercation ensued which resulted in the victim being shot.

“We don’t know the motive at this point and to offer one would be speculative. We are looking into the possibility of his activities which led to a meeting with the individual in the alley may have led to the confrontation and his death,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the CPS Homicide Unit.

Investigators are looking for a dark coloured SUV, seen speeding from the scene.

Merhi’s murder is Calgary’s 32nd of 2015.
