Severe thunderstorms are on tap once again for sections of southern Alberta and a rainfall warning is now in effect for areas north and west of the city.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Airdrie, Cochrane, Olds, Sundre, Kananaskis, Canmore, Nordegg, Rocky Mountain House and Caroline at about 4:00 p.m.

The agency says a system is moving into the area from Montana bringing significant rain fall and that there is an isolated chance that a tornado could develope late in the afternoon or early evening.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Hanna, Coronation and Oyen just after 4:00 and residents can expect strong wind gusts, heavy rain and possibly hail in the area.

The severe thunderstorm watch includes: Okotoks, High River, Claresholm, Brooks, Strathmore, Vulcan, Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River, Cardston, Fort Macleod, Magrath, Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Waterton, Medicine Hat, Suffield, Bow Island, Cypress Hills.

A severe thunderstorm watch has ended for the City of Calgary.
