The RCMP Major Crimes Unit has been called in to investigate the death of a woman at a home in Strathmore and police say her death is considered suspicious.

Police responded to a home in the 100 block of 6 Avenue just after 1:00 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a 911 call from a woman.

When they arrived, they found a woman dead in the basement suite of the duplex.

"The 911 call requesting assistance by the female came from the residence we attended. A few minutes after that call was made, members from Strathmore detachment attended that residence and found a deceased adult female," said RCMP S/Sgt Kevin Reilly.

Investigators have not released the identity of the victim but say that she was a tenant and lived alone in the unit.

Police do not have anyone in custody but say there are persons of interest in the case.

“There are certainly persons of interest, but we are in the very early stages,” said Reilly. “We are currently in the process of trying to notify next of kin.”

Residents in the area say the building is fairly new and was built within the last year so the occupants likely haven't lived there for very long.

Neighbours say they have seen a couple coming and going from the home and that the news is unsettling.

“It’s worrying cause I’ve got younger sisters and yea that’s worrying to think that they walk around here. My mum would have let them before walk around to the shop or whatever and now she won’t. It’s definitely worrying, definitely lock the doors, “said Callum Greenaway.

“Very shocked yea, just it’s a pretty quiet neighbourhood and we’re just new here as well so we’re not too familiar with anyone around but people around here are very nice and just shocked that this was what we woke up to this morning,” said Aaron, who lives nearby.

There is no word yet on when an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
