A home in Medicine Hat has been boarded up after police launched an investigation in connection to drug activity at the residence in the spring.

A Community Safety Order was issued against the owner of the property at 390 Aberdeen Street SE and the SCAN (Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods) Unit then closed the home, fenced the property and changed the locks.

The order and closure are part of ongoing efforts to deal with criminal activity associated with the home, which is located across the street from a daycare.

In April, Medicine Hat police launched an investigation that included directed patrols, surveillance and an undercover buy operation and a 44-year-old man from the home was charged with drug related offences.

In May, SCAN members observed evidence of drug activity at the home and used it, and information gathered from police, to obtain the CSO from the court.

“Keeping Alberta’s communities safe is a priority for our government and I thank the law enforcement personnel involved in this closure. This work is integral to protecting the neighbourhoods we call home,” said Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General.

The owner and any occupants of the home have been ordered to vacate the property and it will remain closed for 90 days.

SCAN will continue to monitor the home during the closure.
