A Lethbridge family is preparing for a celebration that will bring together six generations of women from the same family for the holidays and their unusual story is gaining national attention.

To have six generations of the same family all living at the same time is extraordinary but for great, great, great grandmother, Vera Sommerfeld the birth of baby Callie couldn’t have come soon enough.

“It is very special to think that there are that many generations,” said Sommerfeld. “I never thought I'd live to be 96 for one thing and I hope I'm here for a little while longer to see that baby grow up a little bit.”

“On my wedding day she asked me if I was pregnant and then from then on every time I would visit, because we lived in Calgary for a little bit, she'd say, so are you pregnant yet? Are you pregnant yet? Are you pregnant yet?” said Alisa Marsh, Callie's mother.

Marsh says she wanted to have children while she was young so she could keep up with them as they grow but she didn't expect to be a mom quite so soon.

The family is close and tries to get together at least once a month. Sometimes great, great grandma Gwen Shaw has to skype in from her winter getaway in Arizona and the group says having so many mothers and grandmothers in one room can complicate things.

“So I go by G-mammy and she's granny.  Vera is grandma and Gwen is GG.  My kids started that for great grandmother than trying to figure out who all the grandmothers were, because there are a lot of them,” said Amanda Cormier.

The family’s extended, ancestral tree is creating a buzz across the country and even the Prime Minister’s wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, posted a comment on facebook saying… "6 generations of women in one family… what a beautiful gift. Welcome baby Callie!"

“I thought we might get a bit of recognition for it, but I didn't expect this much. But it's always special to invite a new family member, it doesn't matter what generation they're in,” said Gwen Shaw.

“We haven't heard anything from the queen yet have we?  She better hurry up cause I don't know how much longer I'll be here, ha ha ha,” said Sommerfeld.

The women credit good luck and good genes for their health and longevity.
