Heavy snowfall and howling winds have prompted the closure of several highways in the southwest corner of the province.

Fort Macleod RCMP have closed the following sections of highway:

  • Highway 3 between Brocket and Lethbridge
  • Highway 519 between Highway 2 and Highway 23
  • Highway 23 between Barons and Highway 3

Highway 2 between Fort Macleod and Calgary has reopened.

Lethbridge RCMP have closed westbound Highway 3 from the Oldman River Bridge to Highway 25 because of slippery conditions and poor visibility.  Whoop Up Drive has reopened following a temporary closure.

Claresholm RCMP are diverting traffic into the town of Claresholm.

Anyone currently on these highways is asked to find accommodation in the nearest town.

The town of Fort Macleod has arranged for the town’s arena and community centre to be used as a shelter for stranded motorists.

The Nanton Memorial Community Center is also serving as an emergency shelter for travelers.  Contact information for the temporary shelter is available at 403-603-8027.

Vehicles stranded on the shoulder of southern Alberta highways will not be towed until it is safe to do so.
