A remarkable love, an incredible heist, an extraordinary funeral, and an impassioned search for answers to the profound mysteries of life. From Governor General’s Award winning playwright, Djanet Sears, comes a beautiful and deeply moving story set in Negro Creek - a 200 year old Black community in Western Ontario.

Rainey Baldwin-Johnson is a country doctor struggling to come to terms with the loss of her daughter, the disintegration of her marriage and an eccentric elderly father who is on an astonishing crusade. Ellipsis Tree Collective is proud to bring this arresting story to life for the first time for Calgary audiences.

This production is dedicated to the memory of Kathleen Foreman.

“Not to be missed.” Jon Kaplan, NOW magazine (from a 2003 performance, Toronto, ON)

“Let the celebrations begin. One of the most profound, yet joyous new Canadian plays in recent memory. A richly rewarding script.” Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star.

The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God is the third and final play in The Black Canadian Theatre Series - a season of three plays by Black Canadian playwrights about African-Canadian life spanning 150 years: The Real McCoy by Andrew Moodie, John Ware Reimagined by Cheryl Foggo and The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God by Djanet Sears. The Black Canadian Theatre Series is the first of its kind in our province; a legacy project for Alberta!
