City planners have made it clear that when it comes to residential growth they want to build upward not outward and that means you may want to pay closer attention to the developments proposed for your community.

Residents of a southwest neighborhood are upset over a huge apartment tower that is planned for their area.

Currently, there are two towers at Glenmore Gardens along 90th Ave S.W. They were built in 1968 and a third tower was approved at the same time but was not built. That approval is still in place, and now the developer plans to build the third tower.

Residents in the area say forty year old building approvals shouldn't apply and want to stop construction of the building.

"People want some wide open spaces, we want some blue sky, we don't want these towers rammed at us in the middle of our residential neighborhood, and I don't think there's anybody in our city that wants that for their community," said Palliser resident, Jack McGillivray.

The building's design was approved by the planning commission last week but area residents are still planning to appeal the decision.

CTV News tried to reach the building's owners, Great West Life Realty, but were told their offices are closed Monday.
