One man has been transported to hospital following an incident at a shooting range west of the city.

According to RCMP, the mishap occurred at the range located on Highway 68 near Jumping Pound Creek. A high-powered rifle was fired at a metal plate approximately 25 metres away. The bullet ricocheted off the plate, striking a friend of the shooter's in the neck.

At around 2:00 p.m. Sunday, an EMS crew from Cochrane was deployed to the intersection of Highway 22 and the Trans-Canada Highway to rendezvous with an eastbound vehicle transporting the shooting victim.

The adult male was transferred from the vehicle into the ambulance and transported to the Foothills Hospital in serious, life threatening condition. The victim is undergoing emergency surgery.

A preliminary police invesigation into the incident indicates the shooting was accidental.
