An Alberta family believes it has a product that could help with the oil spill cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico.

"This is something that I feel will change history on how they're going to approach oil spills from now on," says Wayne Mitchell.

The chemical compound was discovered in the 1960's by Bill Mitchell who died before seeing FOAM-X on the market.

The product is a sawdust type material which not only absorbs the oil it also allows the oil to be saved through the use of a centrifuge.

FOAM-X has been tested by several agencies over the years.

The Mitchell brothers even have documents showing there was a $35-million agreement with Kuwait before the Gulf War put an end to the deal.

They also tried to help with the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. They sent some samples to cleanup crews but the FOAM-X bags were never opened because it's considered an un-tested product.

The Mitchells say the next logical step would be to test FOAM-X in the Gulf of Mexico but first they have to get BP on board.
