Corrections Canada has locked down the Drumheller Institution to investigate several assaults.

Authorities locked down the federal facility on Sunday, August 7, around 6:00 p.m. after three separate attacks on inmates.

Two of the victims was taken to hospital for assessment, treated, and returned to the institution.

The facility was closed to ensure the safety of the prison population, staff, and public.

The penitentiary will remain under lockdown until the Warden deems it safe to reopen.

Visits for medium security inmates have also been cancelled until further notice.

There are currently 596 medium security and 72 minimum security inmates housed at the Drumheller Institution.
