A Calgary energy company has pleaded guilty and is apologetic over corruption charges after it was found an overseas government official was bribed.
Griffiths Energy paid $2M to a government worker and his wife in Chad over a period of two years, beginning in 2009 while the company was pursuing different projects there.
Representatives of the company say that if the bribery took place, the company’s previous ownership was behind it.
Police say they didn’t open their own investigation into the allegations until after the company notified them about the evidence a year ago.
The company says it will pay the $10M fine for the bribe.
A final judgment is up to the judge who will render a decision on Friday.
