The family of a Calgary woman killed in Afghanistan last week says they will not be intimidated or deterred by terrorists.

57-year old Zeenab Kassam was killed by a Taliban gunman in the Serena Hotel in Kabul, last Thursday.  She was in Afghanistan volunteering as a teacher.

Her brother, Karin-Aly Kassam, says “you use fear, hate, and brute force to bring death.  We chose empathy, knowledge, and hope to bring about life”.

Eight other unarmed civilians were also murdered, including a volunteer doctor from Vancouver.

The terrorists were killed by Afghan Security forces.

Kassam went on to say "we want to thank Canadians and others around the world for their support, their prayers and kind wishes during this difficult time".

Her brother added, while the family was concerned about Zeenab Kassam going so far away, they are proud of her service to others.
