Alberta Health Services has issued a smoke advisory for Calgary and areas west of the city.

The warning comes because of a number of prescribed burns happening in the mountains.

The precautionary advisory applies to Calgary, Lake Louise, Banff, Canmore, Exshaw, Cochrane, Cremona, Sundre, Bragg Creek and surrounding areas.

Officials say smoke from the fires may affect local air quality and could impact the health of children, adults with heart/lung conditions, older adults, smokers and pregnant women.

The health region advises the following for anyone who can taste or smell smoke in the air:

  • Be aware of your symptoms
  • Reduce levels of physical activity as necessary
  • Consider sheltering indoors with windows closed
  • Operate Air Conditioning (while sheltering indoors) using the recirculation mode unless the Air Conditioner is equipped with a pleated air filter or a High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor filter

Anyone concerned about their health is advised to call Health Link at 1-866-408-LINK(5465).

The advisory is in effect from Thursday until Sunday.
