Construction of three dykes along the Highwood River is underway outside of the town of High River in an effort to protect the town from another massive flood.
Workers are building dykes, installing temporary concrete fixtures and utilizing large boulders at locations upstream from the town, just one of many flood mitigation projects the town and province are currently working on.
“In some other locations it might not actually be the dykes, but a temporary concrete structure with blocks or something, to protect the town until we can put an ultimate solution in place,” said Reiley McKerracher, High River’s manager of renewal operations.
On Wednesday evening, the town is hosting an open house about the mitigation work and its current progress.
The event is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Highwood Memorial Centre in High River.
