A Calgary family says they have received hundreds of responses to their offer of a free home and will soon decide who the new homeowners will be.
Jason and Gina Hastie are donating their home to a family that was affected by the floods last June and posted an ad on Kijiji two weeks ago to give it away.
The couple is building a new home on the same site in Killarney and need their old home moved by the middle to end of next month.
The three-bedroom house was built in 1952 and the Hasties have done a number of renovations in the last ten years including new windows and a recently redone kitchen and bathroom.
“The biggest thing was that we absolutely love this neighbourhood. We love our neighbours,” said Jason Hastie. “We couldn’t have asked for better neighbours so to be able to build on the same lot, in a brand new house, was kind of a dream for us.”
Since they placed the ad, at least 1900 people have responded and the Hasties say they will decide who gets their home in the next week or so.
The only cost will be to move the home and the Hasties say they will contribute $1000 to the pot.
Once the house is moved they plan to split the lot and build two in-fills.
“One of the coolest things for us is when we found out, because our lot gets split now but we actually get to keep the same house number that we originally had, so that's cool, and then we’ve got a bigger house, same neighbours, same neighbourhood. We seem to have it all,” said Jason.
The Hasties are also giving away the garage and say it would make a nice log cabin.
