A Calgary police officer has been charged with impaired driving.

Det. Travis Dunkle was stopped at a checkstop on Richmond Road near 17 Avenue S.W. on Saturday at around 11:30 p.m.

Police say Dunkle appeared to be drunk and was given a breath test. The 42-year-old failed the test and was arrested.

This isn't the first time Dunkle has been in trouble with the law.

In April of 2007, RCMP say Dunkle was driving a minvan that collided with a tractor trailer near Didsbury. He was charged with refusing, or failing, to provide a breath sample.

In August of 2007, Dunkle allegedly took a taxi ride in Sylvan Lake while off duty and didn't pay. He was charged with unlawfully obtaining transportation by false pretenses.

Dunkle has been with the Calgary Police Service for 17 years.

He has been relieved from duty with pay.
