The Fairmont Palliser is celebrating its 100th birthday this weekend in grand style with a big party to celebrate the past and future of the hotel in downtown Calgary.

Named after Captain John Palliser, an 1800s-era explorer, the hotel first opened back in 1914.

Back then the hotel was just eight floors but was later expanded to its current 12 floor, 407 room layout.

The building has a formidable reputation in the city, playing host to royalty and movie stars visiting Calgary.

Janet Jacques, who has worked at the hotel for 29 years, says the experience of working at the hotel never gets old. “I still look around and cannot believe this is the place I come to work every day. I am in awe at the luxury, at the detail, the opulence of the place. I can’t believe I am so fortunate to work here.”

This Sunday, the Palliser will be holding a centennial afternoon tea dance. The avenue in front of the hotel will be closed to traffic for the festivities.

The dance runs between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to wear period fashions for the event.
