Residents of Cardston, Alberta could be taking the first steps to lift a ban on the sale of alcohol in their community that has been in place for over 100 years.
Cardston was settled in 1887 by Mormons and more than 80 percent of the people who live there are members of a faith that disapproves of alcohol.
The embargo has been in place since 1905 but during a recent tourism survey, 40 percent of business owners indicated that the prohibition of alcohol sales had a negative impact on business.
On Monday, a steady stream of residents showed up to vote on a non-binding plebiscite on the issue, which would allow the sale of alcohol at restaurants and recreational facilities, like golf courses.
The results of the vote will then be directed to town council to decide if it will make a formal request to the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission to amend the liquor and gaming act.
