Calgary police were out canvassing the neighbourhood of Willow Park on Thursday in an attempt to dredge up information that could lead them to the suspects who started a fire at an area middle school.

Investigators have confirmed that the cause of the fire at Willow Park Middle School on Wednesday morning was arson.

Firefighters got to the scene at around 4 a.m. and found one classroom engulfed in flames.

Police say that they also found several broken windows throughout the school and a number of rocks were also found inside the building.

The CBE has shut down classes at the school for the rest of this week and have not said yet whether or not that shut down will extend into next week.

“It’s too hard to tell at this point and I’m not one to speculate. It’s quite extensive damage. There’s some structural damage as well as some of the inside structure fully destroyed,” says Staff Sergeant Bruce Walker with the CPS.

CBE officials are calling the situation very unfortunate. “Schools are the centre of a community. It can be really hard when something like this happens,” Megan Geyer, with the CBE, said.

Police have no information on why that particular classroom was targeted or why the school itself was a target for vandalism.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
