A 46-year-old man has been charged in connection to a December 2013 murder of a 19-year-old in the northeast community of Bridgeland.

On the afternoon of December 27, 2013, the body of Anthony James Fernandez was located inside a vehicle belonging to the Fernandez family in the alleyway of Colgrove Avenue Northeast. Investigators determined Fernandez had been murdered in the vehicle in the early hours of Christmas Day.

On Tuesday, police interviewed two persons of interest in connection to the death.

“Both men who were taken into custody yesterday were associates of the deceased,” said Acting Staff Sergeant Michael Cavilla. “The motive was robbery, a robbery that went horribly wrong.”

"It was a targeted attack."

In August of 2015, tips from the public emerged following a plea for additional information.

“New information was brought to light and this was coupled with a recent submission to the National DNA data bank which pointed us in the right direction of the two suspects,” said Cavilla.

Terry Wingert, of no fixed address, has been charged with second degree murder.

Wingert is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.

The second unidentified person was released from custody but, according to police, remains a person of interest in Fernandez’s death.

The cause of the 19-year-old's death has not been released.

Investigators believe the suspects in the death attempted to light the vehicle on fire to destroy evidence.
