Hundreds of students headed back to the classroom on Tuesday and the lights were on early in many Calgary households as parents and children got ready for the first day of school.
The Calgary Board of Education welcomed almost 114,000 students back to its 228 schools on Tuesday morning.
Many students in the Calgary Catholic School District also returned to the classroom on September 2. And year-round students in the CCSD system went back on August 6.
The CBE has made a few changes to school bus routes and says it will save about $2M by cutting about 30 buses from its roster.
Fees have also been increased to cover the gap in government funding for some programs.
Drivers are reminded that school zones are now in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on school days.
The speed limit in the city's 180 school zones is 30 km/h and Calgary police began enforcing the new hours on September 1, 2014.
