Davin Portz is a student at National Sport School and is an elite figure skater.

“My mom was a figure skating coach and I’m not a very big guy and I wanted to play hockey like any kid from Canada did and the best way for me to learn to skate was to go figure skating and I ended up just sticking with it longer. I kinda lost the interest didn't have the appeal of having all the equipment on but I liked the freedom of figure skating,” said Portz.

This weekend, Portz will be in Edmonton for sectionals and he's hoping to make the top four so that he can move on to the Skate Canada Challenge.

“I'm competing in pre-novice pairs and threes only one other team so we'll get to go to Challenge and that'll be the end of the line there and then singles if I can place top four then I’ll get to move on to Challenge and if I can finish top 18 then I’ll get to go to Junior Nationals for first time,” said Portz.

Portz grew up in Vauxhall, Alberta and credits the move to Calgary and his enrollment at the school for his progression as a skater.
