Three vehicles were involved in a serious crash on the Trans-Canada Highway east of the city on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a crash at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 791 at about 3:40 p.m.

EMS says five people were involved and three were taken to hospital.

A 17-year-old male from Chestermere had to be extricated from a vehicle and was airlifted to Foothills Hospital by STARS in serious, potentially life threatening condition.

A 16-year-old female from Langdon was also taken to Foothills and is in serious but stable condition.

A 47-year-old woman from Chestermere was taken to the Peter Lougheed Centre in stable condition.

“We are looking at an intersection violation as a possible factor of the collision,” said RCMP Corporal Christopher Hrynyk. “It is an intersection that we do see serious collisions at when they do occur.”

Police say one vehicle was heading northbound on Highway 791, and the other two were going eastbound on Highway 1. The vehicle on Highway 791 stopped at the intersection and was hit by the first eastbound vehicle when it proceeded onto Highway 1. The second eastbound vehicle then hit the first.

The driver of the third vehicle, a 35-year-old man from Strathmore, was not injured.

RCMP in Strathmore closed the eastbound lanes to traffic and rerouted motorists around the scene.

Highway 1 and Highway 791 were reopened to traffic at 8:00 p.m.
