According to the Office of the Mayor of the City of Chestermere, one of the victims of Tuesday afternoon's highway collision east of the city has passed away.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews says she recently received the 'heartbreaking news' of the young man's passing.

On behalf of Council and staff at the City, I extend our deepest sympathies to everyone involved, especially this boy’s family," said Mayor Matthews. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time."

On Tuesday afternoon, three vehicles collided at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 791. Three patients were transported to hospital including a 17-year-old Chestermere resident airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre. At the time of transport, the teen's condition was described as serious, potentially life threatening.

Mayor Matthews adds the fatal collision comes at a time when measures are being put in place to improve the safety of the intersection.

"As a Mayor, it is especially devastating that this would happen just as the City is seeing Alberta Transportation construct a safer intersection for residents, students, and the general public," said Matthews in the released statement.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
