The company in charge of the dams on the rivers leading into the City of Calgary says there is nothing to a Calgary MLA’s fears of high water levels.

Calgary-Bow MLA Alana Delong took issue with very high water levels at the Ghost and Bearspaw Dams and appealed to TransAlta to do something to lower them.

Delong said that her constituents are worried about what could happen with the levels being so high.

“TransAlta has been making everyone pretty nervous because they have been holding those dams full. By the 15th, they should have been essentially ready for flood season,” she said.

However, TransAlta says that there is a very good reason why the levels are so high and they are keeping a close eye on what is going on.

A spokesperson for the company says the water was kept back to help with the flood mitigation and remediation process further downriver.

“Like everyone else we are vigilant. We are watching the snowpack and the river levels and what I can say too is that all of our dams and reservoirs upstream are at their lowest levels of the season. We are as ready as one can be for another natural disaster of the magnitude that we saw last year,” says Stacy Hatcher with TransAlta.

The company and the province are in negotiations to determine the best future plan for flood prevention.
