The Seventh Avenue Free Fare Zone in downtown Calgary will not be extended to the Stampede grounds.

A city committee met on Wednesday afternoon to consider a proposal to extend the zone to include the Stampede Station.

The idea was hatched to give a break on fares to visitors attending conventions and trade shows.

The committee is still considering a reduced fare for visitors and is also looking at a limited access pass.

If the idea is approved, a temporary pass would be issued to visitors so they can get to their convention venues and some of the city's major attractions.

Councillor Andre Chabot says although visitors would pay a reduced rate it would still likely equate to more revenue for the city.

"We could do some of these throw away cards that are relatively inexpensive to produce and sell them at a reduced rate so it's not free but a reduced cost and that would accomplish what we wanted," said Chabot.

Administration will prepare a report and present it to the Transportation Committee in September for their consideration.

The Seventh Avenue Free Fare Zone runs down 7th Ave. from 10th St S.W. City Hall.
