The trial for a woman accused of impaired driving causing death in a crash that killed two people in 2012 is underway in a Calgary courtroom.

Amie Nottebrock was behind the wheel of her Toyota Yaris when it crashed into a Mercedes on January 8, 2012 at about 3:00 in the morning.

Witnesses say the Yaris was travelling at a high rate of speed and ran a red light northbound on Shaganappi Trail when it hit the Mercedes, which was travelling west on Country Hills Blvd.

The driver of the Mercedes, 20-year-old Arsh Brar was killed in the crash, along with the passenger in the Yaris,  21-year-old, Danielle Russell.

Nottebrock was charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing death on January 10, 2012.

Police officers have testified that they estimate Nottebrock's car was travelling at 140 kilometres an hour and that she smelled strongly of alcohol.

Evidence from accident reconstructionists and toxicology reports will be the focus of the trial on Tuesday.
