A Calgary woman is about to realize her fashion designing dreams in a big way.

Ruby Johnson designs, cuts and sews her own clothing, but her dream to break into the highly competitive fashion industry almost didn't happen because of an abusive relationship she endured for 26 years.

Three years ago, the now single mother finally got the courage to leave her spouse and began to focus on self-healing and her craft.

Since then, the 48-year-old and her designs have received lots of attention.

She has just been invited to show her wares at both the Boston and Brooklyn fashion weeks.

"I said ‘but why me?'.I'm just an old lady in Calgary sewing dresses for people and she said we research our designers carefully and produce the dresses that our buyers want to buy," says Johnson.

Friends are hosting a fundraiser to help Ruby raise the funds to head to the U.S. next month.

It will be held at the Lantern Community Church (1401 10 Avenue Southeast) this Sunday at 5:00pm.
