The family and friends of a man who was found unconscious and suffering severe head trauma on a city street last week want to know what happened to him.

Police were called to the intersection of 9th Ave and 5th St. S.W. last Thursday morning after a passersby found 24-year-old Brendan Cathery crumpled and bleeding on a downtown sidewalk.

Cathery had serious injuries to his face and head and his family believes he was brutally beaten.

He was rushed to hospital in serious condition with a fractured skull and his condition has since been upgraded.

Cathery was last seen leaving the Chicago Chop House at about 10:30 pm last Wednesday and was found on the street just after midnight.

“We believe that it’s possible that Mr. Cathery could have been assaulted and possibly robbed. That’s why we have our resources assigned right now. We are not really sure what we have at this point. We are asking the public’s assistance. We are looking at a two hour window to try and figure out what happened and we know, given time of year, that somebody in the public may have seen something,” said CPS S/Sgt. Ralph Veckenstedt.

Sara Smith, Cathery’s girlfriend, spent the last year travelling with Cathery to celebrate their graduation from university.

She says he was out with friends that night and that he called when he left the restaurant to say he was on his way over. He never showed up and she didn’t know what happened until she received a phone call.

“It was horrible hearing about it. I think it’s horrible that people out there could do this to someone who is the nicest guy in the world,” said Smith.

Cathery is recovering in hospital but he still doesn’t know what happened that night.

Police are asking anyone who may have any information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
